Dr. Kimberly Cruise
Dr. Kimberly Cruise was born and raised in Cedar Rapids. She graduated valedictorian from Kennedy High School and earned a music scholarship to attend Luther College in Decorah, Iowa. She graduated with honors in three years. While at Luther, she was selected for membership in the Phi Beta Kappa and Beta Sigma Kappa academic honor societies. She then attended Illinois College of Optometry in Chicago, IL and graduated second in the class of 1998. She earned several awards for clinical excellence including the Bausch & Lomb contact lens award. Due to academic excellence, she was nominated for membership to the Tomb and Key Honor Fraternity and the Gold Key International Optometric Honor Society.
Dr. Cruise joined Iowa EyeCare in August of 1998. She has been invited to become a member of the Clinical Board of Examiners in Optometry. She enjoys teaching and lecturing while also serving on the Education Committee of the Iowa Optometric Association. While lecturing, she helped launch two pharmaceutical ophthalmic medications. She has also sat on several pharmaceutical round-tables. Her clinical areas of interest include dry eye, contact lenses, allergy, macular degeneration, glaucoma and comprehensive family eye care. In the past, she has been a member of the local Lion’s Club and Daybreak Rotary. She has also volunteered with Habitat for Humanity.
Dr. Cruise’s husband, Chris, teaches mathematics at Washington High School. He is also the head men’s swimming coach. He runs an instructional competitive swimming clinic during the summer months. They have two children, Tyler and Conner. As a family they are very active members of New Covenant Bible Church. They also enjoy traveling together and numerous water sports.

Dr. David W. Christensen
Dr. David W. Christensen came to Iowa EyeCare in August of 2000 after graduating from the University of Missouri-St. Louis School of Optometry. His clinical interests include contact lens fitting and management of eye diseases. Dr. Christensen received the top award in his class for “excellence in clinical care” and was one of two to receive a similar award for his expertise in contact lens fitting. He is also active in the Iowa Optometric Association, currently serving on the Membership Committee.
Dr. Christensen grew up in Grimes, IA which is a suburb of Des Moines. He graduated from Dallas Center-Grimes High School where he was active in athletics (football, basketball and golf). He then attended Buena Vista University where he earned a bachelor’s degree in Biology while earning Cum Laude honors. He also participated on the golf team at Buena Vista where he was twice named an Academic All-American. He also finished in the top ten at the conference tournament his junior and senior year earning All-Conference honors in the Iowa Conference.
Dr. Christensen is married to Lindy, who is a full time mother. She is active in volunteering at St. Pius Elementary School and St. Pius Church. They have 3 children and as a family, they enjoy traveling and playing sports.

Dr. Dennis Francis
Dr. Dennis Francis joined Iowa EyeCare in January 2002. He is originally from the state of West Virginia. There he attended West Virginia University earning a Bachelor’s of Arts in Biology. He then attended the Illinois College of Optometry in Chicago where he earned his doctorate in Optometry. After graduation he joined a large private medical ophthalmology practice in Rockford, Illinois. He worked there for 4 1/2 years with a strong emphasis on the treatment of ocular disease and surgical management. His greatest clinical interest is in ocular disease.
Dr. Francis resides in Robins with his wife, Karen, and three daughters. He and his family attend Veritas Church in downtown Cedar Rapids. His interests include archery, bass fishing, hiking, and other outdoor activities with his family and friends. Outside of his involvement with church and family, Dr. Francis’ passion is hunting with the bow and arrow. His spare time is spent each autumn in the passionate pursuit of the Iowa whitetail deer.

Dr. Ryan W. Nelson
Dr. Ryan W. Nelson, O.D., is an active member of the Iowa Optometric Association and has been a member of the American Optometric Association for over 13 years.
Dr. Nelson serves as the LASIK Clinical Director and has successfully completed certification training for Alcon Wavelight Refractive Suite. His clinical areas of expertise include refraction for glasses and contact lenses, surgical co-management, dry eye, glaucoma, macular degeneration and diabetic eye disease.
Dr. Nelson is from Marion, Iowa, and graduated from Linn-Mar High School before continuing his education at the University of Northern Iowa in Cedar Falls. During undergrad, Dr. Nelson was a founding member of the UNI Pre-Optometry Club and served as President for 3 years. Dr. Nelson is a graduate of Southern College of Optometry (SCO) in Memphis, Tennessee, and he was recognized and earned several awards for his clinical excellence while attending optometry school. At SCO, Dr. Nelson served also as President of the Lions Club.

Dr. Tom Anderson
Dr. Tom Anderson was born and raised in Fort Dodge, Iowa, and graduated from Fort Dodge High School. After graduation he attended Luther College for 2 years and transferred to the University of Iowa where he graduated in 1981. Dr. Anderson is a 1988 graduate of Illinois College of Optometry in Chicago, Illinois, specializing in contact lenses. While at ICO, he was on the Dean’s list. Dr. Anderson worked at LensCrafters in Cedar Rapids from 1988-2005, at which time he joined Dr. Brown in private practice in Hiawatha. Dr. Anderson joined the Iowa EyeCare family December 30, 2011.
Dr. Anderson’s wife Sharon is an advisor of insurance for businesses at The Accel Group, and they have three children. The family are members at First Lutheran Church in Cedar Rapids. Besides being the biggest supporter of his children’s sporting activities, Dr. Anderson enjoys a good golf game, basketball, and of course seeing a great Iowa football game.

Dr. Aimee Colander
Dr. Aimee Colander was raised in Center Point, Iowa and graduated from Center Point-Urbana High School. She received her bachelor’s degree in biology from the University of Northern Iowa in Cedar Falls, Iowa, and completed her Doctor of Optometry degree at Indiana University School of Optometry in Bloomington, Indiana. Dr. Colander graduated from IU with academic honors and was a member of the Gold Key National Optometric Society and Beta Sigma Kappa Honor Society. After graduation, she completed a year-long ocular disease residency at the Huntington VA Medical Center in Huntington, West Virginia.
Dr. Colander joined Iowa EyeCare in June 2015. She is a member of the Iowa Optometric Association and the American Optometric Association. Along with her husband, Brian, they have one son and enjoy spending time with their families, attending church, and watching Chicago sports teams. In her free time, Dr. Colander likes spending time outdoors, running, and reading novels.

Dr. Detlef Sleichter
Dr. Detlef Sleichter was born and raised in Iowa where he attended undergraduate school at Loras College. While there he was involved in several organizations and was awarded the Fr. Ray Herman Peace and Justice Service Award for his dedication to serving others.
He received his Doctor of Optometry degree at MCPHS University in Worcester, Massachusetts in 2017. He graduated with several honors: Beta Sigma Kappa, Gold Key Society, President’s Award (as voted by faculty and staff), Peer Award (as voted by his classmates), and the VSP/AOF Practice Excellence Scholarship for his performance in patient care. He was also involved in several organizations: president of Student Academy of Optometry, president of Fellowship of Christian Optometrists, and the co-creator of Walk Fit, a program geared towards connecting students to community members with visual impairment. He was involved on a global level using his profession to serve those in Haiti and Tanzania.
Dr. Sleichter recently completed a residency at the Kansas City Veteran’s Affairs Medical Center focused on ocular disease and low vision. While there he gained extensive experience in the management of ocular disease including glaucoma, macular degeneration, diabetic eye disease, dry eye, corneal trauma, uveitis, and cataracts. His area of interest spans across all types of patients as he also completed rotations focused on pediatrics, contact lens, and post-surgical care.
Dr. Sleichter, his wife, and son are excited to be back in Iowa and look forward to the opportunity to serve the greater Cedar Rapids area.

Dr. Louis Probst
As National Medical Director of TLC Laser Eye Centers, the largest laser vision correction group in the United States, Dr. Probst is one of the most experienced surgeons in the United States. Over 16 years, Dr. Probst has performed over 100,000 LASIK procedures, given over 200 lectures and provides training to surgeons and eye doctors at refractive surgery conferences throughout the world. He has published over 50 articles in peer-reviewed journals and 80 book chapters on refractive surgery. Dr. Probst co-authored the reference textbook titled LASIK: Advances, Controversies, and Custom, used by eye care professionals worldwide. As a leader in LASIK, he developed several instruments specifically for LASIK procedures.
Dr. Probst performs all aspects of refractive surgery – LASIK for myopia, hyperopia, and astigmatism, as well as PRK. Dr. Probst strives to make the laser vision correction experience as pleasant as possible for each patient. His extensive experience and genuine concern for each patient is demonstrated through his confident, calm, and compassionate demeanor.
Dr. Probst completed residency training in Ophthalmology at the University of Western Ontario where he received four awards from his peers for outstanding achievement. He was selected from among ophthalmologists across North America for a surgical fellowship in corneal transplantation and refractive surgery at the University of Minnesota. The fellowship included training with world leaders in cornea and refractive surgery and treating patients from across the world with complex corneal conditions. Prior to the US FDA approval of laser vision correction in 1996, Dr. Probst began performing LASIK in Canada. He has since relocated to the United States and performed over 100,000 LASIK procedures over the last 16 years using the best lasers available in the world, including the VISX Star S4 CustomVue and the IntraLase iFS femtosecond lasers.
